Delhi’s 180-Day Deadline: Scrap Your Expired Vehicle Before It’s Seized

In the National Capital Territory of Delhi, a strict regulatory clock is now ticking for vehicle owners. As per the orders issued by the Delhi Government, any diesel or petrol vehicle that has crossed 10 years to 15 years from its date of registration is officially classified as an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV). From the date of expiry, owners are granted a maximum grace period of 180 days to responsibly dispose of their vehicle through an authorised scrapping channel.

After this period, if the expired vehicle is found on public roads, in parking spaces, or anywhere within public view, it is liable to be seized and impounded by enforcement authorities—with a penalty.

A Policy of Zero Tolerance

The enforcement of this rule is not symbolic. Vehicles—whether functional or abandoned—are being removed in compliance with the directives of the National Green Tribunal and the Motor Vehicles Act. This action is part of Delhi’s broader effort to improve air quality, reduce congestion, and eliminate high-emission legacy vehicles from the transport ecosystem.

If it is found violating the 10-15 year rule in any way, the law permits the authorities to impound it without prior notice or compensation.

The Cost of Inaction

No Financial Recovery

Vehicles seized by the government are not eligible for resale value, insurance claim. Once impounded, the vehicle becomes a public liability.

Exposure to Legal Risk

In addition to the loss of value, owners may be subject to fines, penalties, and legal action for violating public safety and environmental compliance laws.

Scrap Legally. Earn Responsibly.

The responsible path forward is to voluntarily scrap the expired vehicle through an authorised scrapping facility—and receive both legal documentation and monetary benefits in return.

Certificate of Deposit (CoD)

This government-recognised document serves as proof of legal scrapping and enables the following benefits:

  • Discounts of up to 5% from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) when purchasing a new vehicle.
  • Exemption from vehicle registration fees.
  • Road tax concessions (up to 25%).

Dos Next Gen offers fair compensation based on vehicle weight, material recovery, and condition—paid directly to the vehicle owner.

Seamless RTO De-registration

Final Thought: The Time to Act Is Now

The regulations are clear. In Delhi, both petrol and diesel vehicles must be scrapped after 10-15 years respectively, with a 180-day grace period for lawful disposal. The risk of forfeiture without compensation, legal penalties, and environmental non-compliance far outweighs any benefit of delay.

Dos Next Gen provides an opportunity not just to comply with the law, but to do so in a way that is rewarding, transparent, and aligned with India’s commitment to clean mobility.
